1 September 2025
We’re working on both sides of Bulleen Road as tunnelling continues on North East Link.
What we'll be doing
Activities to support tunnelling works will take place 24 hours a day, seven days a week. During this time, we’ll aim to minimise noise and light impacts away from your property as much as possible.
Oversize deliveries
We'll be delivering large pre-cast panel beams that will form part of the southern ventilation structure and roof of the tunnel.
Deliveries will occur between 11pm and 5am Mondays to Fridays, with up to six deliveries each night. Most deliveries will arrive from the Eastern Freeway and Bulleen Road before entering our work site off Bulleen Road near the Carey Sports Complex.
Oversize deliveries will also be taking place overnight at our Manningham work site to deliver pieces of the new gantry crane. Once built, the gantry crane will be used to extract the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) when they finish their journey at the Manningham work site in 2026.
Managing construction impacts
Throughout our works, you may experience noise, light, dust, and vibration. We manage these impacts through real time monitoring, water carts and street sweepers, targeted lighting, and reducing noise and vibration within the construction zone.
You may notice workers on local streets capturing photos as part of our ongoing management of these impacts. We do this in conjunction with our modelling to ensure we have an accurate understanding of how these impacts may be felt in different areas. We will notify you before capturing any photos that include your property and we are happy to provide these photos upon request.
You may also see workers machinery in place, in and around construction areas, workers completing surveys in local streets and an increase of trucks removing dirt from our worksites.
September closures
As works progress, from mid-September to early October, we’ll need to close lanes on Manningham Road, Bulleen Road and Bridge Street in Bulleen to allow crews to safely carry out drainage works as part of the future Manningham Road interchange.
1. Manningham Road and Bridge Street closures: Overnight only from 7pm to 9am, Friday 19 September to Sunday 21 September
Detour via Lower Heidelberg Road, Burke Road North, Doncaster and Bulleen roads. Westbound access on Manningham Road will still be available. Local access for residents and businesses on Bridge Street will remain open under traffic management.
2. Bulleen Road and Bridge Street closures: From 8pm Friday 19 September to 6am Friday 26 September, and from 8pm Tuesday 30 September to 6am Monday 6 October
Bulleen Road will be closed southbound between Manningham Road and Noelle Street. There will be lane closures on Manningham Road, Bridge Street and Bulleen Road with reduced access in both directions. Detours via Manningham and Thompsons roads.
Drivers can expect delays of up to 40 minutes during these works. We’re working hard to minimise disruptions to the local community
Upcoming disruptions across North East Link Program
Freeways, interchanges, and roads are starting to take shape above ground while tunnelling continues underground. Traffic disruptions are expected from Greensborough to the Eastern Freeway as works ramp up this September.
Upcoming disruptions include:
- Eastern Freeway closed in both directions between Doncaster Road and Tram Road from 10pm Friday 5 September.
- M80 Ring Road closed in both directions between Plenty Road and Greensborough Bypass from 7.30pm Friday 19 September.
We’re working hard to minimise disruptions to the local community. Please plan ahead and allow additional travel time.
Track our TBMs
Our TBMs are powering ahead, excavating the North East Link Tunnels from Watsonia to Bulleen.
Both TBMs will take planned breaks throughout their journey from Watsonia to Bulleen to undertake regular maintenance.
You can track their progress at Tunnel boring machines tracker.
