We’re building the new M80 Ring Road Interchange in Greensborough and Watsonia North, with express lanes to the North East Link tunnels.

We’ve started building the new M80 Ring Road Interchange in Greensborough, with express lanes to the North East Link tunnels and connections for local trips.

We’re removing the traffic lights at the existing M80 Ring Road intersection to ease congestion and slash travel times.

The new interchange will seamlessly connect the M80 Ring Road to the Greensborough Bypass, an upgraded Greensborough Road, and will add express lanes to the new North East Link Tunnels in Watsonia.

The M80 Ring Road Interchange design minimises the height of ramps and overpass bridges to mitigate visual and noise impacts to the residents.

Five new lanes and smart technology from Plenty Road to a new M80 Ring Road Interchange will also deliver faster, safer trips for drivers.

Works in the area will increase significantly as we continue to build the new interchange and extra lanes on the M80 Ring Road and Greensborough Bypass.

What you need to know

To support ongoing works on the M80 Ring Road and Greensborough Bypass, we’re building the new interchange in stages to reduce construction impacts and disruptions.

To do this, we’ll be working overnight and on weekends from August to December 2025. These works will involve realigning the M80 Ring Road between Plenty Road and Greensborough Bypass to make room to construct the new interchange and additional lanes.

In early September, we’ll shift Altona-bound traffic onto new lanes to open new working spaces. During this time, we’ll temporarily close the exit ramp to Plenty Road to prepare to build new lanes.

In mid-September, we’ll build a new temporary M80 Ring Road Interchange at the Greensborough Bypass and relocate existing traffic lights. This traffic arrangement will be in place for up to 18 months.

We'll complete works later this year along the M80 Ring Road Greensborough-bound to make room for new work areas and to move traffic onto new lanes between Plenty Road and Greensborough Bypass.

Upcoming works

From 7.30pm, Friday 19 September to 5.30am, Monday 22 September, we’ll close the M80 Ring Road in both directions between Plenty Road and Greensborough Bypass, and the Greensborough Bypass between Diamond Creek Road and Grimshaw Street.

Detours will be in place via Grimshaw Street, Plenty Road and Diamond Creek Road. Delays of up to 60 minutes are expected.

Following works in September, the existing traffic lights will be relocated, and crews will create a new temporary intersection closer to the Macorna Street walking and cycling bridge.

Transport disruptions across the M80 Ring Road Completion project and North East Link Tunnels

Expect intermittent lane, ramp and road closures, and speed reductions at night and on weekends on the M80 Ring Road, Grimshaw Street, Watsonia Road, Greensborough Bypass and Greensborough Highway.

Lane and road closures will be required at times to prepare and shift M80 Ring Road lanes at the interchange and on the Greensborough Bypass. Sections of the M80 Trail and Greensborough Bypass Path are closed with temporary long-term detours in place. In Bulleen, we are completing critical drainage works as part of the construction of the future Manningham Road interchange for the North East Link Tunnels project. As works progress, we’ll close lanes on Manningham Road, Bulleen Road, and Bridge Street from mid-September to early October.
