7 May 2026
We’re completing the M80 Ring Road Upgrade, which will provide a seamless connection to the new North East Link tunnels..
From early May to June, we’ll be working 24/7 to build the first sections of the Elder Street landscaped bridge and open the permanent lanes on Greensborough Highway.
During this time, Elder Street will be closed at the intersection of Greensborough Highway to the Frensham Road roundabout.
When finished, the bridge will form a green gateway to Watsonia Station and local shops, while separating local traffic from the North East Link lanes below to help ease congestion.
What you need to know
From Friday 8 May, Elder Street will be closed to through traffic. There will also be a reduced speed limit of 40km/h and lane closures at times in place along Greensborough Highway between Grimshaw Street and Watsonia Road.
Please follow signed detours, on road signage and directions from traffic controllers.
Once these works are complete in June, we’ll ramp up construction of the Elder Street landscaped bridge and move traffic onto the new permanent Greensborough Highway lanes.
You’ll see bridge construction activity continue at the Greensborough Highway and Elder Street intersection until late 2026. There will be a temporary U-turn arrangement in place for northbound traffic on Greensborough Highway to maintain access to Elder Street.
Elder Street will be left-in, left-out only until late 2026.
Access in and out of Elder Street will be maintained for locals, however there will be restricted movements at times.
