We're upgrading level crossings on the Shepparton Line as part of works to enable VLocity trains to travel to and from Shepparton for the first time.

As part of Stage 2 of the Shepparton Line Upgrade, train detection technology is being upgraded at 59 level crossings between Donnybrook and Shepparton to improve safety for train passengers and road users, and allow VLocity trains to travel on the line for the first time.

Safety will be boosted further at 32 of these crossings, which will be upgraded to feature boom gates, flashing lights and bells.

Why do these crossings need improved protection?

The more modern VLocity trains that will run on the Shepparton Line accelerate faster and are lighter than the existing fleet of diesel trains, which is why improved train detection technology is required.

Level crossings with multiple safety features such as boom gates, flashing lights and bells ensure that road users, train passengers and staff will be alert and aware near railway tracks.

Trains are fast moving, so it is important to use visual (seen) and auditory (heard) means to alert all nearby road users to take extra care near the tracks, particularly at crossings.

How will the upgraded level crossings operate?

The boom gates, flashing lights and bells will be automatically activated by triggers on the track every time a train is approaching.

The waiting time at level crossings depends on train traffic. The crossing stays activated until the train has passed through and the section is clear.

The volume of the new bells installed as part of the project will be in line with standards. This is to ensure the sound level will be audible to all level crossing users.

In the event that a level crossing malfunctions, there are multiple fail-safe measures to ensure that they will do so with the boom gates down so everyone is safe.

Delivering benefits for Shepparton Line passengers

Stage 2 of the Shepparton Line Upgrade is providing the infrastructure required for VLocity trains to run to and from Shepparton for the first time, improving service reliability and providing passengers with more comfortable journeys.

This includes a new stabling facility to house the trains as well as the level crossing upgrades between Donnybrook and Shepparton and a crossing loop extension near Murchison East. The crossing loop extension will improve reliability by giving passenger and freight trains more opportunities to pass each other.

Stage 3 of the project includes track and signalling upgrades to enable nine return services on weekdays and faster journeys.
