More transport, more homes, more jobs

Our city and state are growing. Melbourne will be a city of 9 million people by the 2050s – the size of London today.

We need more transport and more homes in the right places – and Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) will deliver both.

As both a transport and urban planning project, SRL will connect our suburbs, slash travel times and ensure our city grows in the right places. It will support the delivery of more homes and housing choice where people want to live – on the doorstep of world-class public transport, services, jobs, schools, parks and cafés.

Linking every major train service from the Frankston Line to the Werribee Line via Melbourne Airport, SRL will transform our public transport network – better connecting Victorians to employment, hospitals, universities and each other. Regional passengers won’t have to travel through the CBD to get where they need to go, with transport super hubs at Clayton, Broadmeadows and Sunshine.

Construction of SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill is powering ahead at all 6 station sites. Planning is well underway to ensure the neighbourhoods around these stations are vibrant and thriving communities for generations to come.

SRL East timeline

Building 26km twin rail tunnels and 6 new underground stations is a big and complex task. Trains will be taking passengers on SRL East in 2035.

We thank residents and traders for their patience and cooperation during the extended construction phase.

Stakeholder and community engagement

SRL East: Cheltenham to Box Hill

26km twin rail tunnels and 6 new underground stations

SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill will slash travel times and open up access to Melbourne's east and south east, including for those travelling from Gippsland. Trains will be running in 2035.

New underground stations will be built at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill.

Works powering ahead

Construction is powering ahead, with works underway at all 6 station sites and the train stabling facility in Heatherton.

Crews are building launch sites for tunnel boring machines and moving underground services to prepare for the start of tunnelling in 2026.

Places to live, work and play

The neighbourhoods around the new SRL stations will be vibrant, thriving communities. Shops, cafés, schools and healthcare will all be easily accessible from the new stations.

More homes and housing choice

SRL will support Melbourne as we grow to a city of nearly nine million by the mid-century. We’re carefully planning now to ensure the areas around SRL East stations will be ready to meet the needs of our growing population, with a long term vision for 70,000 more homes, and more housing choice - including affordable housing.

Building the new underground stations provides an opportunity to enhance the surrounding neighbourhoods, with additional walking and cycling paths, and improved open spaces - making them even better places to live, work and play.

Improving travel around Melbourne

The 90-kilometre SRL will link every major rail line from the Frankston Line to the Werribee Line, via Melbourne Airport - better connecting Victorians to jobs, retail, education, health services and each other. SRL will change the way people move, easing demand on the existing transport network and shifting more people out of their cars.

Creating jobs, growing our economy

Creating a long pipeline of work over several decades, SRL will support up to 24,000 jobs during construction, including opportunities for apprentices, trainees and cadets – contributing to the next generation of highly skilled workers. Construction of SRL East alone is creating up to 8,000 direct jobs.

Connections for regional Victoria

Three transport super hubs at Clayton, Broadmeadows and Sunshine will connect regional passengers to SRL. This means better access for all Victorians to our world-class education, health services and employment opportunities in the middle suburbs.

SRL East Stations

SRL Cheltenham

A new station at Sir William Fry Reserve will connect people to the Cheltenham employment district, and retail and entertainment at Southland Shopping Centre.

SRL Clayton (interchange – Cranbourne/Pakenham/Bairnsdale/Traralgon)

A transport super hub on Clayton Road will provide access to local health services and link passengers from regional Victoria to SRL via the existing train station.

SRL Monash

Located next to Monash University, the new station will provide a rail connection for the first time to the largest employment and innovation hub outside the CBD, providing easier access for thousands of students and people working in the area.

SRL Glen Waverley (interchange – Glen Waverley)

A new station just west of Kingsway will be located in the Glen Waverley activity centre and the existing train station and bus network.

SRL Burwood

Located opposite Deakin University on Burwood Highway, the new station will connect thousands of local residents, students and staff to the rail network.

SRL Box Hill (interchange – Lilydale/Belgrave)

The new SRL station will be in the heart of Box Hill, providing a connection to the existing train station, shopping centre, Box Hill Institute, health and medical facilities.

Planning around the new stations

Careful planning is underway for the broader areas around each SRL East station, underpinned by extensive and ongoing feedback from local residents, traders, councils and other stakeholders.

We've been talking to people about what they want to see happen in their neighbourhoods and incorporating their feedback since 2019.

Structure plans are expected to be finalised in 2026, ensuring these communities continue to be thriving places to live, work and visit for future generations.
