Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East between Cheltenham and Box Hill will deliver huge benefits to those in Melbourne's east, south east and regional Victoria, with faster and more reliable public transport and greater access to jobs, health and education.
SRL is comprised of 3 sections: SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill, SRL North from Box Hill to Melbourne Airport and SRL West from Melbourne Airport to Werribee. It will be delivered progressively.
Construction of SRL East is underway this year, with trains running by 2035. The twin tunnel line will include 6 new underground stations at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill, delivering immediate and long-lasting benefits.
Turn up and go
Trains are expected to initially run every 6 minutes in the peak periods between Cheltenham and Box Hill, becoming more frequent as demand increases.
Cycling infrastructure
SRL East will deliver fantastic transport connections at the new stations, including convenient bus interchanges, between 400 and 750 bike parks at every station, and more than 15kms of new and upgraded walking and cycling paths in the surrounding areas.
22 minutes from Cheltenham to Box Hill
Travel time between most SRL stations is estimated to be three to four minutes. An end-to-end journey from Cheltenham to Box Hill will take just 22 minutes. A journey between Cheltenham and Clayton currently takes up to 45 minutes on public transport, but will take less than 10 minutes on SRL East.
70,000 passengers every day
Around 70,000 passengers are expected to use SRL East every day in 2036. Box Hill and Clayton will |be the busiest stations, with 15,000 people boarding at each – comparable to Caulfield station.
Creating thousands of jobs
SRL will deliver a long pipeline of jobs and training opportunities. Works on SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill will create up to 8,000 jobs and many more indirect employment opportunities for Victorians.
More regional passengers
Regional passenger numbers will increase by around 10% on the Gippsland corridor. SRL East will connect regional visitors to vital health and education services. Travel times between Traralgon and Box Hill Hospital for example will be around 26 minutes faster – taking around two and a half hours and making train travel times comparable to driving.
Easing pressure on the network
Busy interchange stations like Richmond and Caulfield would see between 2,400 and 3,300 less passengers per day. During the 2-hour morning peak, the Dandenong line is expected to have 3,200 less passengers heading towards the city after Clayton, freeing up the equivalent of three high-capacity metro trains.
Jobs in Monash
Melbourne's second biggest employment centre will boom with an additional 19,000 jobs within a short walk from the new SRL Station at Monash in 2036. By 2056, jobs are expected to increase by almost 350%.
Better access to jobs
SRL East will provide convenient access to more diverse jobs. In 2036, people from Bayside, Monash, Greater Dandenong and Whitehorse will be able to access an additional 100,000 jobs within an hour on public transport. People travelling from Moe will have access to twice the number of jobs in Melbourne's middle suburbs within a 120-minute journey.
Slashing travel times
From 2035, public transport users will experience much faster journeys on SRL East. They will save up to one hour on a one-way trip between precincts. Those travelling from Cheltenham for example, will save 40 minutes to an hour on a one-way trip to Monash, Glen Waverley or Burwood.
Vibrant neighbourhoods
Greater investment, urban planning and new initiatives in the broader areas around stations will build on the strengths of Melbourne’s vibrant middle suburbs. SRL will help to deliver more housing options and services and new and improved public spaces. SRL East will deliver more jobs closer to where people live. By 2036, SRL East Precincts will be home to 192,500 jobs (up from 120,500 in 2018), and 73,000 households (up from 48,500 in 2018).
Environment and sustainability
Sustainability is a key feature of SRL East. The 6 new underground stations to be at least 5-star green rated and the high tech trains will run on 100% renewable energy. For every tree impacted by construction, we'll plant an average of 3 in its place – doubling the tree canopy in SRL station precincts and creating cool and inviting public spaces.
