1 September 2023 to 30 December 2025

Works are continuing in Burwood to deliver SRL East for Melbourne and Victoria.

We’re commencing the construction of a tunnel access structure (TAS) in Burwood. This is required to make way for major construction and underground tunnelling for SRL East.

The TAS is a large vertical shaft extending from ground level to the beginning of the planned underground tunnel. This will involve excavation, piling and installation of steel support beams.

These works will be carried out from early September 2023 until late 2025. We will continue working in stages from this site until the completion of SRL East.

These works will be undertaken during day time working hours. There may up to 2 night shifts in early September 2023.

Day time working hours

  • 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday
  • 7am to 1pm, Saturday

Night time working hours

  • 6pm to 7am, Monday to Sunday

(Up to 2 night shifts in early September 2023)

Burwood site compound (previously Sinnott Street Reserve) from early September 2023

  • Delivery of heavy equipment to site both overnight and during the day via Burwood Highway
  • Drilling casings to form a piling wall
  • Excavation of the tunnel access shaft
  • Installation of steel support beams to support the structure
  • On street parking will be permanently closed on McComas Grove.

Burwood Highway from early September 2023

  • Reduced speeds on Burwood Highway between Cumming Street and McIntyre Street during off-peak, day-time working hours.

How we will manage our works

We will be using equipment that generates medium levels of noise, dust and vibrations. We will minimise impacts to the community by:

  • Street sweeping and installing rumble strips at site driveways to lower dirt spread
  • Positioning equipment as far as possible from residents and businesses
  • Turning equipment off when not in use
  • Applying water during cutting and drilling if required
  • Regularly keeping the community updated via works notifications as construction progresses.

Noise impacts

As with all major infrastructure projects, surrounding communities may experience some impacts during construction. The project will support businesses and residents to ensure people can continue to live, work, study and shop in their local community.

Traffic impacts

Traffic changes are needed to complete these works. Vehicle and pedestrian access to homes and businesses will be maintained at all times with help from traffic controllers when required. Please see below for details of traffic changes in the area.

Future works

Works including utility relocations will continue within Burwood as we prepare for the construction of the underground tunnel. We will provide further details of these works over the coming months.
