15 February 2024

We have identified asbestos containing materials (ACM) at 171-175 and 172-176 Old Dandenong Road, Heatherton.

Most of the ACM in these buildings is non-friable (at no risk of becoming airborne); however, some friable ACM has been identified.

Friable means that the ACM is in a form that could become airborne if not appropriately managed.

The ACM will be safely removed from 20 February as part of demolition works.

A third-party occupational hygienist, WorkSafe Victoria and the EPA have assessed the planned works and control measures and have confirmed the works are not expected to pose health or safety risks to the workers or the local community.

Increased safety controls are in place for the removal of the friable ACM. This involves enclosing the ACM in an air bubble and removing contaminated air including any asbestos particles.

Throughout the demolition of the buildings, dust suppression measures will be applied. All ACM from the demolished buildings will be directly loaded into a pre-lined bin.

The bin will then be covered and moved to a licensed facility for its safe and appropriate disposal.
