Construction at the Northern Portal on Whitehall Street and surrounding areas

Between now and the end of August, the West Gate Tunnel Project (WGTP) will be continuing works at the Northern Portal on Whitehall Street and throughout Yarraville.

If any of these works are expected to be disruptive, we will be in touch before they begin.

We’re continuing construction work at our Northern Portal site along Whitehall Street between Youell Street and Somerville Road. The Portal is an integral part of the Project’s tunnelling hub with activities being carried out 24/7 to support tunnelling activities. You may notice minor construction noise from within the construction site as well as truck movements to and from the site.

We are also continuing to build sections of the road deck and ventilation ducts. Other construction works include concrete pours, installing precast concrete units and building walls.

We’re continuing construction work at our Northern Portal site along Whitehall Street between Youell Street and Somerville Road.

The Portal is an integral part of the Project’s tunnelling hub with activities being carried out 24/7 to support tunnelling activities. You may notice minor construction noise from within the construction site as well as truck movements to and from the site.

We are also continuing to build sections of the road deck and ventilation ducts. Other construction works include concrete pours, installing precast concrete units and building walls.

Tunnelling for the West Gate Tunnel Project has commenced with both Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) operating 24/7. Bella, the first TBM, commenced her 4km journey to build the outbound tunnel in March, while Vida, which will construct the 2.8km inbound tunnel, started tunnelling late April.

Most residents and businesses along the tunnel alignment are not expected to experience any discernible ground borne noise or vibration impacts from construction.

Work is underway to build the Freeway Control Centre (FCC) inside the Northern Portal. The FCC building will be the operations centre for the West Gate Tunnel.

These works include foundations, concrete works and installation of precast concrete segments.

Work is underway to finish stage one of the new walking and shared cycling path for Harris Street which will connect Hyde Street to a new bridge over Whitehall Street.

he reinstatement works include water main relocation and kerb and road re-instatement. These works also include utility relocation along Whitehall Street.

Traffic management is in place on Harris Street between Cowper and Whitehall Street for the duration of these works. Vehicle access from Whitehall Street to Harris Street will be restored after these works.

Kindred Studios and Kindred Café are still open for business with several access routes available for pedestrians.

The West Gate Tunnel Project in partnership with Jemena will be working to relocate and elevate the existing overhead electrical conductors on Whitehall Street as part of the new walking and shared cycling bridge.
These works will take place during the day and night and will, include power pole replacement on Whitehall Street, will require lane closures between Somerville Road and Youell Street.

These works are part of the relocation and elevation of the overhead electrical conductors as part of the new walking and shared cycling bridge. These will take place on the Eastern side of Whitehall Street between Somerville Road and Youell Street and will include the removal of power poles.

Lane closures and traffic management will be in place.

Construction of the bridges over the Maribyrnong River will start from May 2022. The first crossing to be built will be the on ramps to MacKenzie Road. This will be followed by the main bridge in late 2022.

These works will require construction of a large 1,600 tonne crane, partial and full closures of Maribyrnong River and in the second half of the year, use of a part of Maribyrnong Street. More information about changes to parking and access in this area will be shared with the community prior to works starting.

Gas works have been completed along Maribyrnong Street. The asphalt and pavement have been reinstated and barriers have been removed.as works have been completed along Maribyrnong Street.

You may see our team carrying out water sampling as part of our regular groundwater monitoring requirements to confirm that ground water is behaving as expected.
You may also see the ground monitoring team around the local streets and local parks installing further monitoring equipment in preparation for tunnelling.
These works may include traffic changes for drivers on local roads and occasional nightworks, however there will be minimal noise impacts to surrounding residents and businesses.

Works will be completed primarily during the day with occasional nightworks.

Construction vehicles will be moving in and out of the area including excavators, concrete trucks, cranes and rollers.
Minor vibration and noise may be experienced during these works.

Water-spray trucks and road sweepers will be used in local streets around our worksites, keeping local roads clean during construction.

Changes in traffic conditions may be experienced during these activities.Lighting will be angled away from homes wherever possible whilst we are working at night.
