We are working hard to deliver the West Gate Tunnel Project, with more than 70 per cent of the works on the West Gate Freeway now complete. In the coming weeks we have more work to do to strengthen the bridges over Williamstown Road and the Newport rail line, install new noise walls and build the new walking and cycling path along Fogarty Avenue.
Unfortunately, to progress these works, further road closures are required. We know that there has already been significant disruption in your local area and we have planned these works to minimise impacts as much as possible.

We have taken on board recent feedback about the impact of multiple road closures in the local area and have scheduled these works to avoid Williamstown Road and the link under the West Gate Freeway between Fogarty Avenue and The Avenue being closed at the same time.
During the closure of Fogarty Avenue between Footscray Hockey Club and Wembley Avenue, we will keep The Avenue open in order to provide access to the soccer and hockey clubs. During closures of The Avenue access to the clubs will be via Fogarty Avenue.
We have worked to minimise the number of road closures and maintain access by putting in place a number of long-term shuttle flow traffic management arrangements along The Avenue and Fogarty Avenue, including:
- under the West Gate Freeway continuing from 22 January to 7 May 2022
- at Wembley Avenue from 23 March to 13 April 2022
- from Wembley Avenue to Footscray Hockey Club from 3 April to 12 May
Please note, works may be rescheduled and dates above are subject to change in the event of unexpected impacts like bad weather. We appreciate the patience of local residents and businesses while we carry out these important works.
The works between now and mid-2022 are planned to be the last of our major work packages in Fogarty Avenue. In the second half of this year, we expect to be working on the new walking and cycling path over the creek at the eastern end of Fogarty Ave. There is also some finishing work to go on the Muir Street pedestrian bridge. While these works may require some short-term closures, it is expected to be less disruptive than the work over the coming months.

These works include
- Ongoing bridge strengthening and widening works near Williamstown Road.
- Construction of the new Hyde Street freeway ramps.
- Ongoing freeway widening works above The Avenue underpass.
- Noise wall works including installation of new permanent noise wall panels and removal of temporary noise walls between Williamstown Road and Grieve Parade.
- Ongoing works near Fogarty Avenue including electrical freeway cabling and sensors, fire hydrant crossings, drainage, shared user path construction, noise wall removal, kerbing, and re-surfacing of the road, between March and mid-2022.
- Completion of less disruptive works along freeway verges, and at the end of streets leading up to the freeway including landscaping, kerbing, shared user paths, barriers, drainage and asphalting between March 2022 and mid-2023.
What you can expect during the works
- Direct contact from the project team if there are changes to your driveway access or rubbish collection.
- On-road signage to guide vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians safely around the works.
- Signage on impacted bus stops with information about temporary PTV bus route changes.
- Work will be completed behind safety barriers with construction vehicles moving in and out of work areas.
- Access to businesses will be maintained – please follow detour signage and direction of traffic controllers.
- Traffic updates via our weekly traffic email, Big Build website, social media accounts and radio.
- Lighting will be angled away from homes whenever possible when we’re working at night.
- Water-spray trucks and road sweepers used in the local streets around our worksites.
