Update on 5 October 2023: Footscray Road walking and cycling path closure extended to 5am Monday 9 October 2023

The walking and cycling path along Footscray Road,between Waterfront Way and Shepherd Bridge, will be closed continuously from 8pm Monday 11 September 2023 to 5am Monday 9 October 2023 to safely carry out bridge construction work. There will be detours and signage in place during these closures.

Footscray Road, West Melbourne

The West Gate Tunnel Project will be installing steel beams over Footscray Road spanning between Appleton Dock Road to Shepherd Bridge that will support the new elevated bridge.

When we’ll be working

We’ll be working from Friday 6 October to Friday 22 December 2023.

What we’ll be doing

From 8pm, 6 October 2023 to 7am, 22 December 2023 there will be a number of traffic impacts along Footscray Road. Over the next few months and at different stages, we will have:

• Full closures.
• Lane closures.
• Contraflow arrangements.
• walking and cycling path closures.

These will be occurring between Waterfront Way and Shepherd Bridge.

Additional works and impacts

Footscray Road – full closure

Footscray Road between the CityLink bridge and Appleton Dock Road will from 9pm Friday 6 October to 5am Monday 9 October 2023 to safely carry out bridge construction work. There will be detours and signage in place during these closures.

Footscray Road – Lane closures

Ongoing, continuous single and double lane closures occurring throughout the day and night in order to facilitate the continued construction of the elevated road bridge.

Footscray Road – contraflow arrangement

The project will be using this opportunity to also set up a single lane, 24/7 contraflow arrangement to complete other work along Footscray Road between Shepherds Bridge and Pearl River Road.

Footscray Road – walking and cycling path closure

The walking and cycling path along Footscray Road,between Waterfront Way and Shepherd Bridge will be closed continuously from 8pm Monday 11 September 2023 to 8pm Friday 6 October 2023 to safely carry out bridge construction work. There will be detours and signage in place during these closures.

Wurundjeri Way and Dudley Street.

There will be ongoing construction activities and closures of Wurundjeri Way and Dudley Street from 8 October 2023. Check the Big Build website for the most up-to-date information.  You can also view the notification for more information on this work.

Noise

Works will be occurring continuously from Friday 6 October to Friday 22 December 2023. You may notice minor construction noise, including intermittent noise at night.

Depending on type of works and if works are expected to create extra noise, the West Gate Tunnel Project team will be in contact with residents directly.

Scope of works

• Steel beams installation and associated super structure works.
• Traffic signalling infrastructure between south of Waterfront Way and the CityLink Bridge.
• Pavement construction on north and southbound between Appleton Dock Road and Shepherd Bridge.
• Civil and Kerb works along Footscray Road.
• 24/7 construction activity on Footscray Road, truck movements in the area and increased construction activity at our sites.

Changes to the way you travel

While these closures are happening, the modelling suggests that there will be an increase in traffic volumes along Footscray Road. We recommend Dynon Road as the preferred detour option. Please see map in the notification.
