Installation of concrete noise wall panels
Next week and in early 2021, the West Gate Tunnel Project team will be installing the concrete noise wall panels between Steel Street and The Avenue. We will install noise wall panels onto the new posts as they become available and as we can access areas. The locations for panel installation are also somewhat determined by our construction program, i.e. the order in which work needs to be completed to facilitate the next stage of works.
The new noise walls will be around eight-to-nine metres high. In some sections, they will be topped with pale blue and green coloured acrylic panels. Where space permits, planting will be used to screen the noise walls. The new noise walls will provide you much better protection from freeway noise than the old noise walls. They have been designed to achieve a daytime average noise level of 63dB(A) at nearby houses, which will mean a significant reduction in noise levels for many residents.
Hours of work
These works will be carried out at night, from Monday to Friday between 6pm – 5am. This is because freeway lanes will need to be closed at night, so we can safely carry out the works.
What to expect during these works
- Construction vehicles will be moving in and out of the work areas.
- Low level noise from cranes installing the new noise wall panels.
- The main access to the construction sites will be via our work area on the freeway side with minimal site access required via local roads.
- Lighting will be used during the night works, and will be angled away from homes where possible.
- Traffic changes including lane closures will be required.

Please note that works are subject to change and may be rescheduled in the event of unexpected impacts to the construction program. Thank you for your patience during these works.
