About the project

The road to transforming the west.

The West Gate Tunnel is the biggest transport infrastructure project Melbourne’s west has ever seen, and it’s now open for Victorians to enjoy.

As a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, it provides a much-needed second river crossing, quicker and safer journeys, and removes over 9000 trucks from residential streets in the inner west.

The project is a partnership between the Victorian Government and Transurban. It was built by construction contractors CPB Contractors and John Holland.

By providing more reliable access from Melbourne’s west to the city and northern suburbs, and new links to the port, the city and CityLink, the West Gate Tunnel offers drivers the choice of using either the tunnel or the West Gate Bridge.

We've built:

  • 2 tunnels under Yarraville
  • a new bridge over the Maribyrnong River, creating a second river crossing
  • 4 new through-lanes on the West Gate Freeway
  • an elevated road above Footscray Road
  • a new extension for Wurundjeri Way
  • 2 new connections from West Gate Freeway to Hyde Street in Yarraville, for more reliable and direct access to industry.

We've also created nearly 9 hectares of new open space and 14km of new and upgraded walking and cycling paths, creating more ways to get around and places to enjoy. More than 9km of high-quality noise walls are now in place, to achieve a new standard for residents along the West Gate Freeway corridor, making it significantly quieter for nearby residents and local sportsground users.
