School engagement program

The West Gate Tunnel opened on 14 December 2025.

West Gate Kids was the school engagement program of the West Gate Tunnel Project targeting schools in Melbourne's west.

The program was created for primary and secondary students from 6 to 12 years of age.

Promoting real-world learning

West Gate Kids linked directly to the school curriculum and promotes the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) subjects.

The program promoted real-world learning using urban design challenges from the project as a basis for its activities. It supported students from diverse backgrounds to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of future career opportunities related to transport and infrastructure.

Engineering our city

Our delivery partner SciencePlay Kids was led by Dr Lorien Parker aka ‘Dr Loz’. Working together, we aim to engage, enlighten, entertain and educate students in the west of Melbourne. An award-winning scientist, Dr Loz was named in 2018 as one of Australia’s 100 Women of Influence in the Australian Financial Review.

What does an 'Engineering our city' session look like?

The Engineering our city sessions explored the design, engineering and development of a city. The content focused on civil engineering and transport infrastructure including tunnels, bridges, roads and bike paths.
