Final designs for the Boronia Station upgrade have been released, with early works getting underway to deliver a more modern and accessible station precinct.
Architectural designs show a modern new station forecourt featuring a striking canopy inspired by flora from the nearby Dandenong Ranges, and an expanded concourse to improve connections over the rail line.
A new landscaped plaza between the station and Dorset Road will create more green space and seating areas, with the signalised pedestrian crossing moving closer to the plaza to make it easier for pedestrians to travel between the station and the Boronia shopping precinct.
The station concourse will be widened by relocating the ticket office to the entry on Erica Avenue and moving the protective services office to the Lupton Way entrance, boosting safety by creating a clear line of sight through the station and the new plaza.
Accessibility will be improved with an updated pick-up and drop-off zone on Lupton Way, upgraded footpaths to both station entrances, and more bike hoops and better connections for cyclists.
New shelters, seating and improved lighting will be installed on the platforms to provide protection from the weather and make waiting for a train more comfortable.
Additional lighting and CCTV throughout the station precinct will also boost safety for locals enjoying the new facilities. Safety and traffic flow will also be improved by upgrading the traffic lights at the intersection of Dorset and Chandler roads to include a dedicated right turn arrow for drivers.
A new pocket park near the Boronia Junction Shopping Centre will also be built as part of the project, featuring garden beds, more trees, additional seating and a nature play area.
Major works will kick off early next year, with the station upgrade to be completed in 2026.
