The Mordialloc and Aspendale communities have come together to celebrate completion of the new Mordialloc Station and level crossing removals at McDonald Street, Mordialloc and Station Street, Aspendale, which opened in May.
More than 150 locals gathered for the event at the premium new station on Saturday, enjoying food and family-friendly activities, including a petting zoo, face painting, pet ‘pawtraits’, live music, and a roving entertainer performing magic, juggling and bubble art.
Crews have been putting the finishing touches on the project, including improved road, walking and cycling connections across Mordialloc and Aspendale, and new public spaces and landscaping that celebrates the local area.
The new station entrance at McDonald Street is now open, making it easier to get around the precinct.
Crews have carefully restored the former platform 1 station building, now serving as the new protective services officer building, adding a new roof, plumbing and internal fit out, and a fresh coat of paint for the 144-year-old building.
Visitors to Groves Reserve in Aspendale can also learn more about Bunurong culture and history through a new interpretive trail developed as part of the project.
Created in partnership with Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, the Registered Aboriginal Party for the area, the interpretive trail celebrates the deep cultural connection Bunurong Peoples have with the land, waterways and skies.
More than 1,800 trees and 100,000 plants, shrubs and grasses have been planted in Mordialloc and Aspendale, including a sunken garden in the station forecourt to provide a seating area for rail passengers to pause and connect. The garden will integrate with the station’s sustainable water management system.
