Beam there, done that: Keon celebrates another key milestone

Back to Newsfeed

A level crossing free Keon Parade is one step closer with all 32 of the rail bridge beams now lifted into place on the city-bound line.

The 30m long concrete L-beams, each weighing a whopping 122 tonnes, were lifted into place by a giant 650-tonne crane.

Pairs of L-beams were joined together by a concrete “stitch”, forming a U-shaped trough for the trains to run through on the elevated rail line.

Elevating the rail line will improve safety and reduce congestion for the 18,000 vehicles travelling through the level crossing each weekday, where the boom gates are down for more than 41 minutes during the morning peak.

Crews will continue getting the city-bound 750m long rail bridge ready for trains, with work on the Mernda-bound rail bridge to follow.

The vibrant new Keon Park Station will have elevated platforms with access via lifts or stairs, shelter, lighting and CCTV. Located on the south side of Keon Parade, the station will have improved connections to local neighbourhoods, JC Donath Reserve, buses and Johnson Street shops and cafes.

With construction well underway, Keon Parade will be boom gate free and the new Keon Park Station open to the community in 2025.
