Boom gates gone for good at Bear Street, Mordialloc

Trains have resumed running on the Frankston Line after crews wrapped up a 10-day construction blitz as part of works to get rid of 3 bayside level crossings and build the new premium Mordialloc Station.

More than 300 workers worked around the clock to dismantle the Bear Street boom gates and signalling, and demolish parts of the station and platform, including removing rail tracks and other rail infrastructure.

The team also installed more than 10,000 tonnes of hardstand concrete to provide foundations for construction equipment and machinery and installed about 9km of new overhead wiring for trains, and a new section of track.

Passengers on the replacement buses enjoyed slices, cookies and tiramisu from Mordialloc’s Main Street and Siesta cafes, Alby’s Deli and Bruno’s Chicken Shop.

All trains at Mordialloc Station are now arriving and departing from Platform 1, with Frankston Line services running to an altered timetable until mid 2026, to minimise disruption while construction continues on the elevated rail bridges and new station.

Bear Street is now permanently closed to traffic at the former level crossing, which will create space for a vibrant new station precinct under the rail bridge.

Thank you to everyone for your patience while crews worked to complete these major works.

Mordialloc will be boom gate free and the new elevated Mordialloc Station will open mid 2026, featuring modern facilities and improved accessibility, including entrances at both ends of the platforms, improved lighting, public spaces and landscaping with more than 80,000 trees, shrubs and grasses.

The Frankston Line will be level crossing free by 2029 transforming the way locals live, work and travel.
