Bridge supports on the up at Hopkins Road

The new Hopkins Road bridge in Truganina is taking shape, with works to build the north and south bridge supports nearing completion.

Crews have poured the first stage of both the north and south abutment walls that will elevate the new road bridge over the rail line.

The process involved tying together steel reinforcements before pouring more than 300 cubic metres of concrete into giant moulds to form the wall structure.

With piling now complete, crews have started to build the bridge piers that will support the central span of the new road bridge.

Earthworks are also continuing to build the two road bridge embankments, with more than 100,000 tonnes of soil already moved into place, with an additional 150,000 tonnes set to be moved to site to complete construction.

Over the next couple of months, 14 L-shaped panels will be lifted in to form the retaining walls, while the bridge’s 27 giant support beams will be positioned into place later this year.

The Hopkins Road level crossing will be gone for good and the new road bridge open in 2026.

Another 3 level crossings will go next year in Melbourne’s west, at Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads, Melton. A new Melton Station also will open to passengers in 2026, two years ahead of schedule.
