Works to get rid of 3 dangerous level crossings on the Frankston Line have reached new heights, as foundations for the new rail bridges at McDonald Street, Mordialloc and Station Street, Aspendale start to take shape.
This week we poured the first of the concrete columns, called piers, and crossheads that will elevate the rail bridge, with a total of 20 concrete piers to be poured for the McDonald Street rail bridge and 6 piers supporting the Station Street bridge in Aspendale.
Over the coming months, we will continue to construct the rest of the moulds for the concrete piers and crossheads that will support the rail bridges and the elevated platforms for new Mordialloc Station.
The milestone follows months of piling for the bridges’ underground foundations and concrete piers, with 180 holes drilled up to 30m deep – the equivalent to a 10-storey building.
Piling and pier pouring are critical steps in ensuring strong foundations for the rail bridges. Once this work is completed, we will start installing the giant L-shaped beams that will form the U-troughs trains will run through once the project is completed.

With the Bear Street boom gates already gone for good, the 2 remaining level crossings will be removed and the new premium Mordialloc Station open in 2026, bringing the Frankston Line one step closer to being level crossing free in 2029, boosting safety and easing congestion on local roads.
