Two dangerous level crossings in Calder Park will be gone next month, with Calder Park Drive closing to traffic this weekend for final works to complete the new road bridge over the rail line.
Calder Park Drive will be closed between the Calder Freeway and Glenbruar-Manchester Drive roundabout from 1am, Saturday 21 June to 6am, Wednesday 23 July while crews work around the clock to finish asphalting, line-marking and tying-in works.
Buses will also replace trains on the Sunbury Line from first service on Monday 23 June to last service Sunday 29 June as crews lift in the remaining bridge beams.
As part of the 24/7 works, crews will finish painting the new road bridge and the elevated shared use path, built in a striking switchback design to improve accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists using the road bridge’s shared use path.
The path’s surface will be treated with Omnigrip, a specialised road safety product made from recycled Australian glass that provides a durable, slip resistant surface to improve safety and accessibility.
Crews have been busy painting the bridge’s retaining and abutment walls in earthy tones chosen to reflect rock formations in the nearby Organ Pipes National Park, and will finish painting the bridge piers and road kerbs and barriers in the coming weeks.
Works are now complete on the installation of an innovative wire wall that uses rocks and wire mesh instead of concrete panels for the facade of the reinforced earth retaining wall, reducing costs and environmental impacts.
The Calder Park Drive level crossing will be gone for good and the new road bridge will open to traffic at 6am, Wednesday 23 July, boosting safety and easing congestion in the area. The nearby Holden Road level crossing will close at 7am, Wednesday 23 July, following the opening of the road bridge.
The Sunbury Line will be level crossing free in 2025, with 8 level crossings gone for good.
