We're getting on with the job of removing the dangerous and congested level crossing at Cardinia Road in Pakenham, by building a road bridge.
The level crossing at Cardinia Road impacts over 23,000 vehicles per day with boom gates down for up to 30% of the morning peak.
The project will be complemented by upgrades to the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines that will boost road and rail capacity and make travel in the area easier.
Cardinia Road is one of 17 level crossings to be removed on the Pakenham Line – one of Victoria’s busiest with Metro trains, V/Line trains and freight trains all using the corridor. It is also the longest metropolitan rail line in Melbourne.
The road bridge design allows works to happen mostly within the road reserve, helping reduce impacts to the Pakenham Line, road users and nearby wetlands.
The Cardinia Road level crossing is fast tracked for removal with construction to begin later this year and the boom gates gone by 2021.
