Celebrating end of works at Glen Huntly

Over 1500 locals recently turned out to celebrate the end of major works in Glen Huntly, where Meagan Streader was unmasked as the artist selected to create public art for the new Glen Huntly Station.

The community event featured free food and coffee from local traders, ‘Spin the Wheel’ giveaways, face painting, and a petting zoo. Local artist Kate Birrell entertained the crowds with live sketching, as did local musician Andrew Hall, Community radio station ‘Golden Days Radio for Senior Citizens’ and the Caulfield Judo Centre.

Native flowers displayed in custom-made glass cases offered the community a sneak peek at the concept behind Meagan Streader’s artwork, ‘Neon Terrains’.

Two neon sculptures, inspired by local flora species, Everlasting and Love Creeper, are expected to be installed in December 2023.

The removal of the 2 level crossings at Neerim and Glen Huntly roads leaves the City of Glen Eira completely level crossing free, with all 9 sets of boom gates that once inhabited the council area gone for good.

The boom gates were down at these 2 level crossings for almost an hour of the morning peak, adding to congestion in the area and holding up Route 67 trams.

The new modern station precinct improves safety for pedestrians, cyclists, tram passengers and drivers and creates a better connection between the station, shops, homes and amenities.

Notably, the tram square – where trams, trains, and vehicles all intersect – at Glen Huntly Road has been removed, ensuring more reliable journeys for Route 67 trams and locals in Glen Huntly.

The project will be fully complete by 2024 – one year ahead of schedule. The removal of these level crossings takes the Frankston Line another step closer to being level crossing free by 2029, improving safety, reducing congestion and allowing more trains to run more often.

Over the coming months we will continue to complete finishing works across the new Glen Huntly Station car parks and wider station precinct.
