Croydon Station goes out with a bang

Crews have made short work of Croydon Station, knocking down the platform and station buildings in a 3 day demolition blitz as part of works to remove the level crossing at Coolstore Road, Croydon.

We worked around the clock to demolish the 40-year-old station buildings and platform, leaving the tracks and rail infrastructure in place to allow trains to continue running while the new Croydon Transport Hub is built.

The 24/7 works kicked off soon after the last train departed the station, farewelled by a crowd of more than 80 people keen to be a part of rail history.

The former Croydon Station opened in 1984 when the line was duplicated from Ringwood, more than a century after the original station opened as Warrandyte Station in 1882.

It was renamed Croydon Station in 1884 in honour of a local landowner’s wife, who had lived in the English town of the same name, and the suburb of Croydon was born.

With the old station gone, crews will continue to work on building the new rail bridge and modern premium Croydon Station, featuring elevated platforms and 2 entrances and forecourts.

Throughout the works, trains will run express through the station, with shuttle buses connecting passengers to Ringwood East and Mooroolbark stations until the new Croydon Station opens by spring, a year ahead of schedule.
