Upcoming travel changes in Dandenong

Back to Newsfeed

We’re closing Webster Street at the level crossing and building a new road under the rail line, connecting Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street to Cheltenham and Hammond roads.

Webster Street will permanently close at the level crossing from 9pm, Friday 10 October, as construction continues on the new road underpass.

Signage will be in place to help drivers navigate the new travel routes around Dandenong. For more information, see our traffic changes page.

A new 266m walking and cycling path will open at 7am, Friday 10 October, ahead of the road closure.

Running alongside Dandenong Creek through Woodcock Reserve, the path will connect cyclists and pedestrians to the Dandenong Creek Trail, providing safer access under the Cranbourne and Pakenham rail lines and into Dandenong’s CBD.

Construction will continue on the new road underpass during a 24/7 construction blitz starting Friday 10 October. While trains are not running, crews will carry out signalling and overhead wiring work on the line, continue construction on the new rail bridge over the future road underpass, and undertake track and drainage works.

Buses will replace trains on sections of the Gippsland, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines from 8.30pm, Friday 10 October to last service, Thursday 23 October. Please allow extra travel time and plan your journey at Transport Victoria.

More than 200 trains pass through the Webster Street level crossing each day, with the boom gates down for over 60 minutes during the morning peak, causing significant delays for drivers.

The brand-new road underpass will open in 2026 – 2 years ahead of schedule – reducing congestion, improving travel reliability, and setting Dandenong up for future growth.
