The new Maidstone Street road bridge being built in Altona has reached another important milestone, with the final concrete beams lifted into place.
The final 10 beams, measuring up to 33m long and weighing close to 70 tonnes, were lifted into place across 2 days by a 400-tonne crane.
The new road bridge over the rail line comprises of 16 concrete beams, with the remaining giant steel span to be lifted into place in 4 sections.
Crews will now continue to build the bridge deck and retaining walls, relocate underground utilities and prepare the bridge for the steel span that will connect the north and south road alignments.
Vehicles are now using the temporary road built alongside the existing road, minimising disruption to traffic during construction.
Removing the level crossing will reduce congestion for the 14,400 vehicles that use the crossing each day, with the boom gates currently down for 25 minutes of the morning peak.
The Maidstone Street level crossing will be gone for good in 2027, and the Werribee Line will be level crossing free by 2029.
