Crews are gearing up for major works to get rid of 2 level crossings in Calder Park, with a month-long construction blitz to complete the new Calder Park Drive road bridge and close the Holden Road level crossing.
Later next month, crews will work around the clock for 4 weeks to finish asphalting the bridge, line-marking and tying-in the new bridge to the existing road, while a 750-tonne crane will be positioned into place on Calder Park Drive to lift in the remaining bridge beams.
To safely undertake these works, Calder Park Drive will be closed to traffic between the Calder Freeway and Glenbruar-Manchester Drive roundabout from Saturday 21 June to Wednesday 23 July. A detour via Kings Road and Melton Highway will be in place and access to local homes will be maintained.
Buses will also replace trains on the Sunbury Line from Monday 23 June to Sunday 29 June as crews deliver and install the centre bridge beams to connect both sides of the new road bridge over the rail line.
The Calder Park Drive level crossing will be gone for good and the new road bridge and shared use path will open to traffic on Wednesday 23 July, permanently separating trains and vehicles and improving traffic flow in the area.
Safety on local roads will also be boosted by getting rid of the dangerous level crossing at nearby Holden Road, which will close to traffic permanently from 7am, Wednesday 23 July. Holden Road will still be accessible via Plumpton Road.
The U-turn facility on Calder Freeway north of Holden Road will also be closed to keep traffic moving safely, with drivers able to U-turn at Bulla-Diggers Rest Road.
The Sunbury Line will be level crossing free in 2025, with 8 level crossings gone for good. The opening of the Metro Tunnel this year will also give passengers on the Sunbury Line access to five new underground stations in Melbourne.
