The scaffolding has come down on the beautiful new Glen Huntly Station which was built as part of works to remove 2 of Melbourne’s most dangerous and congested level crossings at Neerim and Glen Huntly roads.
To celebrate construction wrapping up, locals are encouraged to head down to check out the new station, find out more about the project, and grab a show bag on Saturday 26 August, 11am to 1pm. Find out more about the Glen Huntly pop up event.
More than 30,000 bricks have been laid on the new station building which pays homage to the old brick station and the architecture of the suburb.
The removal of the 2 level crossings at Neerim and Glen Huntly roads leaves the city of Glen Eira completely level crossing free, with all 9 sets of boom gates that once inhabited the council area gone for good.
The boom gates were down at these 2 level crossings for almost an hour of the morning peak, adding to congestion in the area and holding up Route 67 trams.
The new modern station precinct will improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, tram passengers and drivers as well as create a better connection between the station, shops, homes and amenities. It also includes a new accessible tram stop outside the new station.
Notably, the tram square – where trams, trains, and vehicles all intersect – at Glen Huntly Road has been removed, ensuring more reliable journeys for Route 67 trams and locals in Glen Huntly.
The Glen Huntly Tram Depot is also celebrating its 100th birthday this Saturday. Locals can jump on a Route 67 Tram at the station and head down to the depot for their chance to sit in the driver’s seat of a tram and ding the bell.
Express services are now back on the Frankston Line for the first time since late 2022 when the third track in Glen Huntly was closed so construction could continue.
We thank commuters, traders and locals for their patience while we got on with these works.
Further down the line, works are ramping up on the removal of 2 crossings and construction of a new station in Parkdale. The Frankston Line will be level crossing free with all 27 dangerous and congested level crossings gone for good by 2029.
