Glen Huntly Station – Then and Now

Back to Newsfeed

A vibrant portrayal of Glen Huntly's transformation during level crossing removal works is being displayed in an art exhibition in February.

Local artist Kate Birrell’s exhibition titled Glen Huntly Station – Then and Now, incorporates drawings and paintings exploring the different eras of the station and the surrounding precinct during works to remove the level crossings at Glen Huntly and Neerim roads.

Inspired by the project’s ‘grit, movement and colour’, Birrell first started documenting our works in her distinct style in 2020.

During construction Birrell’s artworks were displayed on fencing and key messaging posters, brightening up the precinct.

Birrell’s sketches, acrylic artworks and oil pieces masterfully capture the essence of a Big Build construction site, featuring tradies in high-vis, big machines, and everyday commuters.

You can visit the exhibit at Gallery Two during February.

The dangerous and congested level crossings at Neerim Road and Glen Huntly Road, Glen Huntly were removed by lowering the rail line into a trench.

With both level crossings gone for good, the Frankston line is one step closer to being level crossing free by 2029.

Across Melbourne, 110 level crossings are being removed by 2030, with 74 already gone, boosting safety and easing congestion.
