Glen Huntly’s Big Dig kicks off tonight

Glen Huntly’s ‘Big Dig’ kicks off tonight, Friday 2 June, with more than 500 workers on site 24/7 digging the 1km rail trench, installing new tracks and signalling, and building the new station.

Earlier this week Neerim Road closed to traffic with crews wasting no time to dismantle the boom gates. Neerim Road will remain closed until late June with detours in place until it reopens.

The boom gates at Glen Huntly Road were removed earlier in May with the road now closed to traffic between Grange Road and James Street until mid July 2023.

The Glen Huntly shops are still open for business, so head down to support your local traders during our works. Pedestrian access will be maintained to the shops with a shuttle available to take people from one side of the rail line to the other as well as Travellers Aid buggies running during the day.

During the ‘Big Dig’ busses will replace trains on the Frankston Line and trams on Route 67. There will also be other road closures in the area. Locals are encouraged to allow extra time and plan their journeys with our disruptions map.

More than 20,000 vehicles travelled through the level crossings at Glen Huntly each weekday where the booms are down for almost an hour of the morning peak. More than 3000 people use Glen Huntly Station every weekday.

Trains will be stopping at the new Glen Huntly Station from early August and the Frankston Line will be boom gate free from the CBD to Moorabbin when works wrap up. The Frankston Line will be level crossing-free by 2029 with all 27 dangerous and congested crossings gone for good, and 17 new stations built, changing the way locals live, work and travel.
