Have your say on Mordialloc level crossing removals

With all dangerous and congested level crossings being removed on the Frankston Line to make it boom gate-free, the community is now invited to provide feedback on the level crossing removal projects in Mordialloc.

The level crossings at McDonald Street, Mordialloc, and Station Street, Aspendale are being fast-tracked for removal by 2026 – 3 years ahead of schedule – and a rail bridge has been determined as the best design for the area. Improvements to the local traffic network will then allow the level crossing at Bear Street, Mordialloc to be closed.

As part of the project, opportunities for new walking and cycling connections will be investigated to improve local access around the rail line.

Early geotechnical investigations have already started in the area, with boreholes and surveys being carried out to inform the detailed design of the project. Planning and design will continue through 2023, with more chances for locals to have their say.

These works, alongside further technical engineering assessments and community feedback, will help shape the design and deliver a project that reflects what locals love about Mordialloc.

As part of early planning, locals are being asked to help shape the Mordialloc level crossing removals by providing feedback on how they move through the area and what’s important to them by 23 July 2023 at Engage Victoria.

More than 26,000 vehicles travel over the McDonald Street and Bear Street, Mordialloc and Station Street, Aspendale level crossings each day. During the morning peak, 33 trains pass through, with boom gates down for around 40 minutes. Since 2016, there have been 12 near misses and one fatality at these locations.

A total of 27 level crossings will be gone from the Frankston Line by 2029, clearing the way for more frequent services, improving safety and easing congestion. Two level crossings will be gone for good, and a new station will be open at Glen Huntly by early August. Major works for the removal of another 2 level crossings and a new station in Parkdale will start later this year.
