It’s set to be a huge year in Dandenong, with the new road underpass connecting Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street to Cheltenham and Hammond roads opening later this year.
Crews closed Webster Street at the level crossing in October last year and are now building a new road under the rail line, with construction well underway and approximately 70 workers on site.
The first section of the base slab for the new underpass was recently poured, using a total of 380 cubic metres of concrete.
Given the site’s proximity to Dandenong Creek, the team is using specialised equipment to remove water from the ground to ensure dry working conditions, as 13 Olympic-sized swimming pools of dirt is excavated for the road underpass.
The new road underpass will reduce congestion, deliver a more reliable road network, and prepare Dandenong for future development.
Getting rid of the Webster Street boom gates eliminates more than 60 minutes of boom gate down time in the morning peak and saves travel time for up to 10,000 drivers who used the crossing each weekday.
