Giant concrete segments, known as L-beams, will soon be craned into place over Keon Parade, as works on the project to remove the dangerous and congested level crossing and build a new Keon Park Station continue at full pace.
The L-beams weigh in at a whopping 122 tonnes and 30m in length, and with 64 of them required across the project – it's heavy work. So much so, that two cranes are required to lift the segments into position; one 600 tonne mobile crane and one 650 tonne crawler crane. The larger crane’s boom (arm) is 100m long, or the length of two Olympic swimming pools!
Manufactured in Laverton North, the L-beams will be joined together to form a U shape, known as a U-trough – which forms the viaduct that trains will run in. For more information on how we’ll build the rail bridge at Keon Parade, check out our fact sheet.
As these works are carried out, Keon Parade will be closed to vehicles at the level crossing from 9pm Wednesday 4 October to 5am Monday 9 October and then again from 9pm Thursday 12 October to 5am Friday 13 October. For more information, or to plan your journey, visit our live disruptions map.
We’re removing the dangerous and congested Keon Parade level crossing by building a 750m long rail bridge over the road and building a brand-new Keon Park Station with modern facilities for passengers.
The vibrant, modern Keon Park Station will be located on the south side of Keon Parade, providing better access to the station and improved connections to local neighbourhoods, JC Donath Reserve, buses and Johnson Street shops, cafés, and eateries.
The project will improve safety and reduce congestion for more than 18,000 vehicles travelling through this level crossing each weekday, with boom gates down for more than 41 minutes during the morning peak, 7am to 9am.
With construction now underway, Keon Parade will be boom gate free and the new Keon Park Station open to the community in 2025.
