The Maidstone Street level crossing removal project has marked another milestone, with the final retaining wall panel lifted into place for the new road bridge.
All 401 concrete panels have now been installed, with the largest measuring almost 3.8m tall and weighing more than 3 tonnes each.
The wall panels incorporate Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer bars, a more sustainable material than traditional steel reinforcement, with the bars weighing up to a third less than comparable strength steel and resistant to rust.
Construction crews will continue to install the remaining aerolite fill for the base of the bridge, and works have commenced on building the new shared pedestrian and bike path along the western side of the bridge.
The new road bridge will be completed and the Maidstone Street level crossing removed in 2027.
