Major construction underway at Calder Park Drive

Major works are underway at Calder Park Drive to build a new road bridge over the Sunbury line, reducing congestion, improving safety and allowing more trains to run more often for Melbourne's booming north-west.

Getting rid of the level crossing at Calder Park Drive, Calder Park will improve traffic flow, meaning the nearby level crossing at Holden Road can be closed permanently, making journeys faster and local roads safer.

Removing the level crossing at these locations will ease congestion and improve safety for more than 10,000 drivers who pass through each day, with boom gates down for up to 20% of the morning peak.

Crews have started piling works to build the foundations of the new road bridge. The first stage of a temporary road has also been built alongside Calder Park Drive to help reduce disruptions and allow locals to safely move through the area during construction.

There will be a closure of Calder Park Drive later this year to finish building the temporary road and open it to the public. We will communicate this closer to the date.

The new road bridge will allow better pedestrian and cycling connections and is future-proofed for future road upgrades as the area grows and develops.

In addition to the removal of these two level crossings, Old Calder Highway and Watsons Road in Diggers Rest are also set to be removed, making the Sunbury line level crossing free in 2025.

Across Melbourne, 110 dangerous and congested level crossings are being removed by 2030, with 72 already gone for good, boosting safety and easing congestion.
