Major construction underway on Camms Road Level Crossing Removal Project

Major construction is ramping up in Melbourne’s growing south east to remove one of the last 2 remaining crossings on the Cranbourne Line, a year ahead of schedule.

The dangerous and congested level crossing at Camms Road is being removed by building a new road bridge over the rail line to improve safety and reduce congestion.

Over the coming months, we will begin piling works near the level crossing. The 35 piles, ranging from 8m to 11m in length, will form the foundations for the new road bridge.

Site preparation works including minor earthworks, service relocations and vegetation removal are already underway and will continue until the end of the year.

There will also be some upcoming disruption on the Cranbourne Line to ensure that works can continue to be carried out safely at Camms Road. During October, buses will replace trains between Dandenong and Cranbourne stations from Saturday 22 October to last service Sunday 23 October.

Removing the level crossing at Camms Road will ease congestion and improve safety for 12,000 drivers who pass through it each day, where boom gates can be down for up to 12% of the morning peak.

With more than 137 trains passing through the level crossing each day – and with 50 more train services per week now running on the Cranbourne Line – it is critical to remove this level crossing in one of Melbourne’s fastest growing areas.

The new road bridge will allow pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross the rail line and features improved lighting along the shared use path and within the upgraded Cranbourne Station car park.

Residents will also be able to walk and cycle to the station precinct and beyond, with a link to a new 4.25km shared path. When complete, the path will create a direct route between Lynbrook, Merinda Park and Cranbourne stations.

The Camms Road Level Crossing Removal Project forms part of the Cranbourne Line Upgrade. Major construction is well underway with 8km of duplicated track between Cranbourne and Dandenong complete and a new Merinda Park Station open to passengers.

In total, 15 level crossings are being removed on the Cranbourne Line, with 13 already gone for good. Camms Road is on track for completion in 2024, with Webster Street in Dandenong the last level crossing to be removed before the line is level crossing-free.
