Vehicles are now travelling on both sides of the Melton Highway’s new road bridge over the Sunbury-Bendigo Line, with the northern side opening to traffic this week.
A successful traffic switch at the beginning of this month has allowed for 2 lanes to operate both eastbound and westbound in the area, as crews work to put the finishing touches on the bridge.
This is a major construction milestone for the team at Melton Highway as they move one step closer to project completion, with all 6 lanes on the bridge expected to be open later this year.
Work will also continue under the new bridge to improve safety and amenity, including completing the north-south connection of Sydenham and Victoria roads, paving and lighting, and finalising public artwork.
Drivers have been enjoying journeys free of boom gates on the southern side of the bridge since the Melton Highway level crossing was removed in January this year.
The removal of this level crossing, as well as the features of the new road bridge, will continue to provide benefits to commuters and the local community for many years to come.
