In January 2018, the Melton Highway level crossing was removed and the south side of the road bridge opened to cars, pedestrians and cyclists.
The northern side of the road bridge opened to traffic in August 2018. Finishing touches to the 6-lane road bridge and surrounds were completed in October 2018.
In addition to the level crossing removal, other improvements as part of this project included:
- new bike lanes and footpaths on the bridge
- the removal of existing pedestrian crossing infrastructure below the bridge
- new paths, vegetation, open space and lighting under and around the bridge
- the connection of Victoria and Sydenham roads under the bridge.
In the new open space near the old level crossing, the former Melton Highway boom gates have been made into an eye-catching sculpture.
