Mordialloc levels up with L-beams

The new rail bridges in Mordialloc and Aspendale are beginning to take shape, with works powering ahead to remove the dangerous and congested level crossings and build a new Mordialloc station.

In mid-September, crews poured the first concrete columns, called piers, that will elevate the rail bridge. There will be a total of 20 concrete piers supporting the McDonald Street rail bridge and 6 piers supporting the Station Street bridge in Aspendale.

With the piers now in place, the elevated rail bridges are starting to take shape, with giant L-shaped beams measuring up to 31m long and weighing up to 128 tonnes now being positioned into place.

These are lifted by large cranes and placed on top of the piers, with 24 of the 68 L-beams now in place. Two L-beams are ‘stitched’ together with concrete to form U-shaped troughs (U-troughs) and these form the base for the train tracks.

From December, large prefabricated concrete beams – called super Ts – will start to be installed for the station area and will form the elevated platforms. Prefabricated sections of the new Mordialloc Station will soon be put in place alongside the super Ts.

Passengers using Mordialloc Station have a front row seat to the construction activity in the new station precinct following removal of the Frankston-bound station building and platform and 2 of the 3 rail tracks.

We’re removing the level crossings at McDonald Street in Mordialloc and Station Street in Aspendale by building new rail bridges.

With the Bear Street boom gates already gone for good, the 2 remaining level crossings will be removed and the new premium Mordialloc Station open in 2026, bringing the Frankston Line one step closer to being level crossing free in 2029, boosting safety and easing congestion on local roads.
