Things are moving quickly with Glen Huntly’s ‘Big Dig’ done and Neerim Road reopening to traffic this morning.
Vehicles can drive on the new boom gate-free road bridge over the rail trench from today. Both lanes are open with traffic management in place while we get on with works.
Neerim Road will close overnight for the next 10 days, so we can put finishing touches on the new road bridge.
After 4 weeks of 24/7 excavation, more than 160,000 cubic metres of soil – the equivalent of 64 Olympic swimming pools – has been removed from the 1.2km rail trench.
Work on the rest of the project is powering ahead with crews working to lay ballast and track as well as starting construction on the station platforms.
Glen Huntly Road will reopen in mid July and trains will be stopping at the new Glen Huntly Station from early August – when the level crossings will officially be gone for good.
