A new shared use path will be built as part of the new Maidstone Street road bridge being built over the rail line in Altona, boosting pedestrian and cyclist connections in the area.
The shared use path design provides safer alternatives for cycling and walking in the area and allows for future cycling infrastructure upgrades between existing on-road cycling corridors on Civic Parade and Kororoit Creek Road.
The two-metre-wide path on the western side of the bridge will extend through to Ajax Road, providing a continuation of off-road paths between Morrow Street and north of the existing level crossing.
The new path forms part of the almost 700m of new pedestrian and cycling paths as part of the Maidstone Street Level Crossing Removal Project.
Crews are building a temporary road on the northern side of the rail line, which will allow vehicles to continue to use Maidstone Street while construction continues on the new road bridge, significantly reducing disruptions to the community.
To finish building the temporary road, Maidstone Street will be closed from Jordan Close to north of the level crossing each night from 8pm to 6am, from Tuesday 16 June to Thursday 18 June, and from 8pm Friday 19 June to 6am, Monday 22 June.
Detours will be in place via Kororoit Creek Road, Millers Road and Civic Parade during these times, with the temporary road opening to traffic from 7am on Monday 22 June.
The Maidstone Street level crossing will be gone for good and the new road bridge open in 2027, improving safety and easing congestion for the 14,400 drivers using the crossing each day.
Five level crossings are going for good in Melbourne’s inner west, in Newport, Altona, Spotswood and Yarraville, boosting safety, easing congestion and making the Werribee Line boom gate free by 2029.
