New rail bridge rises over Mt Derrimut Road

Two gigantic steel bridges have been lifted into place marking a major milestone on the project to remove the dangerous and congested level crossing at Mt Derrimut Road in April, more than a year ahead of schedule.

The 208-tonne steel bridges span 45-metres across Mt Derrimut Road, linking the twin rail tracks above one of western Melbourne’s busiest arterial roads.

A 650-tonne crane carried out the lifts and installation onto concrete columns that will support the bridges.

The steel bridges were transported to Deer Park from Corio, where they are manufactured.

Thank you to local residents who gathered to watch the first bridge lift from a dedicated viewing area on Mt Derrimut Road. While some night owls caught the impressive sight, photos are available below for anyone who missed it.
