Dandenong’s new road underpass is set to open on Tuesday 22 September, with crews now applying the finishing touches to the new road ahead of vehicles travelling through it in late September.
For the first time, the underpass will connect Princes Highway–Lonsdale Street with Cheltenham and Hammond roads, improving connections through Dandenong.
To prepare for the road opening, crews will work around the clock to complete major road works in August and September.
To safely carry out these works, sections of Cheltenham Road will temporarily close, as well as parking spaces in Dandenong Station car park, the Cheltenham and Hammond roads intersection and nearby streets, including lanes and pedestrian paths. To thank the community for their patience during construction, everyone is invited to a free community celebration from 12pm to 3pm on Sunday 20 September. The event will be held in the new road underpass and Dandenong Park, giving the community the chance to be among the first to walk through the new underpass. The new road underpass, being built as part of the Webster Street Level Crossing Removal Project, features a colour scheme inspired by Dandenong’s vibrant and diverse character, incorporating colours such as Fern Green, Homebush Yellow, Waratah and Tangerine.
With a clearance of 5.4m under the rail bridge, the new underpass will help move trucks and heavy vehicles off local streets and out of Dandenong’s CBD.
The new road connection will reduce congestion and deliver a more reliable road network for Dandenong, with drivers able to travel directly from Hammond and Cheltenham roads in the west to a brand-new signalised intersection on Princes Highway–Lonsdale Street in the east.
