It’s full steam ahead in Newport, with major construction ramping up to remove the level crossing at Maddox Road.
During February and March, crews will work 24/7 to build the new rail bridges over Maddox Road and the new walking and cycling bridge at Champion Road and continue asphalting works for the new Akuna Drive link road, connecting to a boom gate free Maddox Road.
Crews will also build 50 new car spaces on Park Crescent and begin intersection upgrade works on Kororoit Creek Road, including a longer turning lane and a new U-turn, and traffic signal upgrades at the Maddox Road and Adeline Street intersections.
To safely enable these works, Maddox Road will be closed at the rail line between 7pm to 7am, Monday 16 February to Wednesday 18 February, and from 7pm, Thursday 19 February until 6am, Friday 6 March while crews work around the clock.
Detours and traffic management signs will be in place, with motorists advised to allow extra travel time through the area.
To keep the Werribee Line moving, trains are currently running on a single track between Newport and Laverton stations until late April 2026. Buses replace trains between Newport and Werribee, and between North Melbourne, Werribee and Williamstown at times in February. For more information visit Transport Victoria.
Five level crossings are going for good in Melbourne’s inner west, at Newport, Altona, Spotswood and Yarraville, making the Werribee line boom gate free by 2030.
