The construction team is digging deep in Dandenong, as crews at the Webster Street Level Crossing Removal Project recently finished piling, digging 403 piles deep into the ground to support the walls of the new road underpass.
More than 38,000 tonnes of soil have been excavated, about two-thirds of soil that will be removed for the new road underpass.
Workers are powering ahead with excavation on the eastern side of the rail line. Once excavation is done, the team will build the underpass base slab, apply waterproofing to the walls and floor, and install a new drainage system that pumps water into a detention basin where it’s naturally filtered before flowing to Dandenong Creek.
With waterproofing complete, architectural walls inspired by Dandenong’s vibrant colours will be installed, followed by road surfacing, line marking, lighting and safety barriers.
The new road connecting Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street to Cheltenham and Hammond roads will open this spring, 2 years ahead of schedule.
With Webster Street closed at the level crossing since October last year, boom gates are now a thing of the past on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines.
The project also delivered a new walking and cycling path along Webster Street, linking with the Dandenong Creek Trail and connecting residents to local shops and services in Dandenong’s CBD.
