The project team at the Webb Street, Narre Warren level crossing removal were joined by some budding gardeners in June.
Pupils from Oatlands Primary School visited the site to plant vegetation in the Narre Warren Station precinct, where more than 63,000 new plants, shrubs and grasses will help create a vibrant new station.
The Webb Street level crossing was removed for good in December last year and a new Narre Warren Station opened in March, improving safety on local roads and providing better access to public transport.
During the planting session the children were able to discuss the finer points of landscaping with LXRP’s expert landscaping team and each one was gifted a plant to take home as a memento of their day.
The vegetation within the Narre Warren Station precinct includes a diverse range of native plants and 300 trees that will ensure the new station precinct contributes positively to the suburb’s greenery.
Earlier this year work was completed on the new station buildings and additional lift access to both platforms. Work has also finished on 672 upgraded car parks for commuters.
The Webb Street level crossing was one of the most dangerous in Melbourne, with 19 near misses between 2012 and its removal in December last year.
The boom gates were down up to a third of the morning peak, causing congestion for 13,200 vehicles every day.
It was the 74th level crossing removed for good across Melbourne, with 110 in total going by 2030. This includes making the Pakenham Line level crossing free by 2025, when the Metro Tunnel opens.
