Preserving the Croydon War Memorial

Alongside our works to remove the dangerous and congested Coolstore Road roundabout and level crossing, we’re also supporting Croydon RSL with its plans to relocate the historic Croydon War Memorial to Civic Square, providing improved access for the community.

The memorial, which is in the form of a drinking fountain, was erected more than 100 years ago to commemorate those from the Croydon district who have served in various conflicts.

This year’s Anzac Day took on added significance, with the community gathering at the memorial for the final dawn service in its current location .

At a pre-works meeting, our workers also learned first-hand of the importance of Anzac Day and the history of the memorial from Croydon RSL Vice President Jonathon.

In the coming months, we will work with Croydon RSL and Maroondah City Council to relocate the war memorial to James N Stevens Memorial Lawn at Civic Square, Croydon.

The new location will provide a safe environment to conduct commemorative services, and a quiet place for the community to visit and remember those who have served.

Planning is already underway, with the relocation to be complete by November, ahead of Remembrance Day.
