For the last two years, the Level Crossing Removal Project has hosted more than 40 students from St Columba’s College to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes to build a bridge at Calder Park Drive, Calder Park.
The project-based learning initiative was developed in collaboration with St Columba’s College, to give students a chance to learn about a diverse range of career pathways.
The class got an all-access pass to the Calder Park Drive level crossing removal site, where they heard presentations from workers across different disciplines on the project.
Students then got the chance to put on their hard hats and check out what was happening on-site. A highlight of the tour was watching our piling works take place, which is a crucial step in building the road bridge foundations.
After learning how a construction project works, the students were tasked with designing their own road bridge based off the Calder Park Drive design solution.
The students then presented their models to the project team.
The cohort thoroughly enjoyed being out onsite and gained first-hand insight into the careers involved in construction projects.
Major works are underway to remove the level crossing at Calder Park, Drive by building a new road bridge over the Sunbury Line.
The level crossing will be removed in 2025 when the Sunbury Line will also be level crossing free and the Metro Tunnel opens, with more services running more often for commuters.
