Works to finish the new Mordialloc Station precinct are continuing following the opening of the new elevated station in May, and level crossing removals at McDonald Street, Mordialloc and Station Street, Aspendale.
While passengers are now enjoying the premium station’s modern facilities, which include 2 entrances, lift and stair access to each platform, a waiting room and toilets, works have been progressing to preserve some of the precinct's more historic landmarks.
Crews have been carefully restoring the former platform 1 station building, which will become the new protective services officer building, adding a new roof, plumbing and internal fit out, and a fresh coat of paint for the 144-year-old building.
The Mordialloc railway water tower dating from 1910 is also being incorporated into the new station precinct, standing proud at the Albert Street entrance as one of the last remaining examples of steam power-related infrastructure in Victoria.
As part of landscaping works, crews have also carefully relocated the existing palm tree that will become a feature of the new Mordialloc Station forecourt.
In Aspendale, a left turn option has been introduced from the new link road onto Nepean Highway, giving drivers travelling south more options at the new set of lights.
The closed southbound lane on Nepean Highway between Parana Street and Kiandra Close will reopen to traffic later this month.
Crews are also building 30 new car spaces on Station Street, and a landscaped open space that will create a new connection between Attenborough Park and Groves Reserve.
Works will continue across the project area until the end of the year, including removing temporary site fencing, resurfacing local roads and reinstating kerbs, completing landscaping and car parking spaces.
