Works underway on Croydon Transport Hub

Construction is underway on a new transport hub that will transform the heart of Croydon as part of the Coolstore Road Level Crossing Removal Project.

The project will include removing the level crossing and chaotic Coolstore Road roundabout, building a brand Croydon Station and bus interchange, and creating 2 new road connections beneath the rail bridge, at Lacey Street and Kent Avenue, and from Devon Street to Wicklow Avenue.

About 10,000 vehicles a day travel across the level crossing, with more than 100 trains passing through each weekday, causing traffic chaos during the peak hour commute.

Workers hit the ground on Tuesday 28 March, to prepare for service relocation and upgrade and tree removal in parts of the project area.

Car parking changes at Croydon Station

There will be some car park closures at Croydon Station to allow crews to operate safely and provide space for materials and machinery to be stored during the project.

Parts of the northern station car park will be closed from Tuesday 28 March. The car park between Mount View and Devon streets will also close for the duration of the project.

Bus routes 380, 670, 671 and 672 will be temporarily relocated to Croydon Road and Kent Avenue.

Connecting the heart of Croydon

The site establishment works will pave the way for major works in late 2023 to build a rail bridge and elevated Croydon Station.

The project team will also be creating upgraded car parking beneath the rail bridge, safer pedestrian and cycling access, and safer access between the station and the bus interchange.

It is just 1 of 6 level crossings currently being removed to make the Lilydale Line level crossing free in 2025.

Round the clock works are currently underway to remove the Union Road, Surrey Hills and Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert level crossings in late May.

Works are also underway to remove level crossings at Dublin Road, Ringwood East, planning under way to close Cave Hill Road, Lilydale and works underway at Bedford Road on the Belgrave Line.

In total, 110 level crossings will be removed by 2030, with 67 already gone for good across Melbourne, making the morning commute safer and roads less congested for drivers.
